Chrysanthemum × morifolium

Conflicting guidance — use caution

Published safety guidance for florist's chrysanthemums differs, and we have not confirmed a non-toxic classification for cats. We recommend choosing another plant for a display your cat can reach. Keep these flowers away from chewing and do not assume that one chrysanthemum reference covers every species or hybrid.

What this guide covers: This page concerns the cultivated florist's chrysanthemum, Chrysanthemum × morifolium. Sources use historical hybrid names; those literal names and their scope must remain visible. It does not cover all chrysanthemums.

Our practical recommendation

Your cat comes first.

Choose another plant for an accessible bouquet or display. Keep florist’s chrysanthemums away from chewing while the exact assessment remains unresolved.

Why the guidance differs

Texas Poison Center Network's pet guide names Chrysanthemum morifolium and flags toxicity and skin irritation. Zurich's veterinary reference lists the cultivated florist's hybrid as non-poisonous while cautioning that it is unsuitable as feed. Neither provides a reconciled, cat-specific assessment for this exact hybrid. Information about pyrethrum species or concentrated flea products cannot automatically be applied to a potted florist's chrysanthemum.

A disagreement between references does not cancel a toxicity warning. We keep those warnings visible while the assessment remains unresolved.
